This district is named after the statue by Louis-Ernest Barrias, 'La Défense de Paris', inaugurated in 1883 to commemorate the defence of Paris in 1871 when it was besieged by the invading Prussian army.
The ultra-modern business district comprises 11 sectors, spread over the suburban districts of Puteaux, Courbevoie and Nanterre. The 1,200m2 pedestrian esplanade is surrounded by high-rise towers, the highest of which has 45-storeys. La Défense is home to over 900 companies.
